11 Barbaric Rape Cases From 2017 Alone That Show That Women In India Aren’t Safe At All

On June 18, it was reported that crimes against women seem to have dropped in the capital of New Delhi this year. According to figures released by Delhi Police, 836 cases of rape have been reported till May 31 compared with 924 in the same period last year. Molestation cases have gone down from 1,841 to 1,412. However, while this may be the case for Delhi – let’s note that reasons for reduction in crimes against women have not yet been analysed – the rest of the country is still struggling with creating a safe environment for women. Here are 11 of many, many atrocious cases of crimes against women that have taken in 2017 alone:
1. Gang-raped and flung from train
On June 16, a 14-year-old was reported as having been raped by six minors and then thrown from a train. The young girl from Bihar claims that one of the rapists is her junior at the school. After being raped, she was badly beaten up and then flung from a train. She was found unconscious on railway tracks near the Kiul railway station on Saturday.
2. Mother gang-raped and baby killed
A 19-year-old mother with an eight-month-old baby was gang raped in Gurugram’s Manesar in a shared auto. She was raped was the driver and two other men on board the auto. When the baby started crying, the three men threw the baby out on the road, where it died.
3. Gang-raped and skull smashed
On May 9, the decomposing body of a woman was found near the Industrial Model of Township in Rohtak. Turns out the girl, 23, was gang-raped and, as if the horror wasn’t enough, her skull was smashed with bricks. The horrendous incident happened in Sonipat after she was abducted by a group of men, one of whom she knew.
4. Child abused by Uncle
A young girl of eight was sexually assaulted by her Uncle many times before she fled that “home”. Her lawyers established her assault in court by referring to a drawing the girl from Kolkata has made while sitting in the trial. She’d sketched an abandoned house, a girl holding balloons attached to entwined strings, and a dress lying beside her and filled it with “gloomy” colours.
5. Four women gang-raped
Four women were gang-raped on the Jewar-Bulandshahr road, off the Yamuna Expressway, This was an eerily similar incident to the July 2016 gangrape, where 35-year-old mother and her 14-year-old daughter were gangraped in Bulandshahr. In the 2017 case, the family was going from Jewar to Bulandshahr hospital. Two tyres were punctured and when the driver got down to help, six men attacked them with rods, knives and pistols.
6. Raped and set on fire
A college girl in Bihar’s Khagaria district was allegedly raped and then set on fire by her boyfriend inside her own home. It was reported on June 19 that the boyfriend entered her house, raped her then poured kerosene oil on her and set her on fire in Temtha Karari village.
7. Husband rapes, wife films
In Telangana, a 38-year-old woman claimed that a couple gave her beer, consumed the same and then raped her. According to her, the 60-year-old husband raped her, while his wife filmed the horrendous act. Later they threatened to release the video if she didn’t continually participate in their sexual acts.
8. Abducted from home and raped
A seven-year-old, who was sleeping next to her mother, was picked up from her house in Amreha Budawan village in UP and raped. She was found in a pool of blood in fields nearby by village members.
9. Sikkimese woman gang-raped for five hours
A 26-year-old woman from Sikkim was raped by three men in a moving car on the Delhi-Gurgaon border, before being dumped in the capital. After being abducted at around 2 am in Gurgaon, she was raped for five hours and also threatened to kill.
10. Father rapes daughter for months
A 45-year-old man was arrested in Mangaluru’s Sasihitlu area of Suratkal on Tuesday on the charge of sexually abusing a minor daughter who later gave birth to a girl child, Police said. The baby, however, died later in the hospital. According to the police, the minor girl (a college student) was repeatedly raped by her own father for the past several months.
11. Raped inside temple
In April 2017, a physically challenged minor girl was raped inside the Lord Jagannath Temple, said the police. The incident happened after the girl went inside for “darshan” and the temple was more or less deserted.
