The apex court proposal for hike in salaries given to judges of the Supreme Court and high courts has been accepted by the government, according to a Times of India report. The proposition suggests a near 200% raise in emoluments. This revision will be in proportion to the recent increase in pay for central government staff.
According to this alteration which happens every 10 years, the SC Chief Justice of India (CJI) will now likely be paid upto Rs 2.8 lakh, in addition to perks such as official residence, cars, staff and allowances. The CJI, who is the highest-paid functionary in judiciary, currently receives a monthly pay of Rs 1 lakh, excluding dearness and other allowances.
Though the proposal has not been accepted by the government completely, salaries of HC chief justice and SC judges will be made on par with that of cabinet secretary, the service chiefs, CAG CEC. While that of HC judges will be pegged at Rs 2.25 lakh per month, same as that of secretary-level officers.
Bringing the pay of retired judges to the level of Seventh Pay Commission, higher pension benefits for retiring judges have also been recommended.
This proposal which needs to be passed by Parliament were submitted after the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission last year.
