Howrah: Cops have arrested the man, whose wife fell to death from their 10th floor apartment in Belur on Friday, on charges of murder and domestic violence. TOI in its Saturday edition had reported the death which followed a spat between the husband and wife following her inability to stand in an ATM queue.
Police have slapped charges under sections 302 and 498A IPC on Brajesh Tiwary, husband of Madhu. The Howrah realtor’s arrest came after Madhu’s father Dinabandhu Mishra lodged a complaint with Belur police on Saturday against his son-in-law and four of his family members. In his complaint, Dinabandhu alleged that Brajesh murdered his daughter. Brajesh’s elder brother Rajesh, sister-in-law Rekha, his niece and father Ram Tiwary were also named in the FIR. All four are absconding, said police.
Cops were initially suspecting it to be a case of suicide. “Our preliminary findings indicate Madhu Tiwary committed suicide as the door of her room was locked from the inside while the balcony door was open,” ACP North Swati Dhangalia had said on Friday.
Madhu and her husband had an angry exchange after she returned home empty-handed from an ATM. Brajesh’s nephew had admitted that his uncle was tense after the currency ban came into effect.
Locals in Belur also reacted to Madhu’s death with most describing her as a victim of demonetisation. Howrah Chamber of Commerce president Sankar Sanyal said, “She is a victim of mismanagement by the government.”
