The Andhra Pradesh government is shifting the II additional CBI Court from Visakhapatnam to Kurnool following the re-defining of the territorial jurisdiction of CBI special courts in Hyderabad which resulted in the exclusion of Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool districts from their purview.

The Registrar (Administration) of Andhra Pradesh High Court has since requested the government to order the shifting of the court to Kurnool.

Accordingly, the government has approved its relocation in Kurnool in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 2 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and in consultation with the High Court giving jurisdiction of the four Rayalaseema districts.

The government, in the second week of October, issued an order for shifting the III additional CBI court from the port city to Vijayawada upon a request by the High Court Registrar (Administration).

Unified A.P. had CBI courts only in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and shifting some of them from Visakhapatnam to Vijayawada and Kurnool has been necessitated by bifurcation of the State and convenience in administering justice in the backward Rayalaseema region.

“It may be noted that advocates in Rayalaseema have been demanding the shifting of the High Court from Amaravati to Kurnool as part of the decentralisation of administration. The branching out of CBI courts is in that direction, observed an advocate practising in the High Court located at Nelapadu in Guntur district.
