An advocate on Friday allegedly attacked a police constable who was on duty in the Madras High Court campus. Immediately after the incident, a video footage went viral through mobile messenger networks.
Police said J. Kandavel, a constable attached to Law and Order police in High Court Police Station, was on duty near Aavin Gate. Along with other constables, he was asking the advocates and others to show their identity cards since the Madras High Court is a restricted place.
The constable stopped the advocate and checked where he was headed to and told him to produce an indentity card. When the advocate confronted him, the constable said he was discharging his duty.
Police said that the advocate abused the constable even after he was allowed to go inside. The advocate returned and slapped the constable, police said.
Kandavel lodged a complaint with the police stating that the advocate had also threatened him and that Sub-Inspector Hemalatha Narayanan and Armed Police constable Sundarapandian were with him at the time of incident.
The High Court Police station booked a case against an unknown advocate for offences under Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) 249b (uttering obscene words) and 506-II (Criminal Intimidation) of Indian Penal Code.
