The Bombay High Court on Monday, refused to urgently hear an application moved by Multiplexes Owners Association, seeking clarification whether there was any order from the court for regulating prices of food items sold inside multiplexes. Few days back in Pune, members of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had assaulted a multiplex staffer over cost of food sold inside cinema halls.
A division bench of Justice Ranjit More and Anuja Prabhudesai refused to issue any direction on the issue on Monday, and said, aggrieved parties were free to approach the police in case of any incident of violence against them.
Last week the court had suggested to the state to regulate food/beverages prices, sold inside multiplexes, saying their cost is many times more than the price of the ticket. The state had sought four weeks time to clear their stand on the issue. Justice More said no clarification, was required as no formal order has been passed until now.
The court made the said observation while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Jainendra Baxi, who challenged prohibition on carrying snacks or any food item from outside into movie theatres and multiplexes across the state. Cinema halls and multiplexes do not allow outside food.
