Assam Congress leader files case against hospitals for refusing to treat patients

Leader of the opposition and senior Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia has filed a case against hospitals refusing to treat patients who fail to produce COVID-19 negative reports in Assam.

Many hospitals in Assam had been turning critically ill patients away for non-production of COVID-19 certificate, Saikia said in his petition.

Accident-related critically injured cases, in which urgent medical care is vital and of paramount importance, were also reportedly turned down. Many people succumbed to their injuries sustained during the accidents, the Congress leader said.

Other vulnerable patients like pregnant women, cardiac patients, etc., are also not admitted in the hospital without the non-COVID medical certificate, he said.

The Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Burhanur Rahman heard the matter.

The Gauhati High Court has fixed October 19 as the date of hearing.
