The courts in Delhi don’t seem to be on the same page when it comes to observing holiday on account of Janamashtami.
While the Delhi High Court has decided to observe holiday on account of Janamashtami on August 14, which was earlier a working day, it will be work as usual at the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Bar Association had made a request on August 1 to the Chief Justice of India for consideration of request to declare August 14 as a holiday on account of Janamashtami.
However, the request was turned down by the Chief Justice since Janmashtami falls on August 15 as per the Government of India
The Delhi High Court and the district courts will, however, be closed on August 14.
In lieu of August 14, second Saturday, falling on September 9, has been declared as court working day for Delhi High Court as well as the district courts.
The cases fixed for August 14 will now be taken up on August 16, in addition to cases already fixed for that day.
The High Court of Punjab and Haryana also issued a circular announcing holiday on August 14. In lieu thereof, it will be working on December 2, which is a Saturday.
