NEET Required For Ayurveda, Homoeopathy Courses: Gujarat High Court

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by some students challenging a rule which made the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) compulsory for the students seeking admission to Ayurveda and homoeopathy courses. The petition sought changes in the Gujarat Professional Medical Educational Courses (Regulation of Admission) Rules, 2017. The rules made a certain minimum NEET score mandatory for Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) and Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) courses.

In the petition, the students had submitted that until 2016, those seeking admission to the two courses only required 50 per cent marks in Class 12 board exam and appear in Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET). The students said that they had appeared for GUJCET but not NEET as they were not interested in applying for other courses.

However, the rules changed making NEET clearance mandatory, the petition said. The government, however, said that all the Class 12 students had been informed about the changes in advance.

As per the reports, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board released a press note on March 8, 2017, stating that GUJCET, which was earlier mandatory for the two courses, will only be conducted for engineering and pharmacy courses. For Ayurveda and homoeopathic courses, NEET was made mandatory, a lawyer said, reported HT.

Before this release, a news report informed that NEET is mandatory medical (MBBS), dental, homoeopathy, Ayurveda and naturopathy courses and admissions to these courses will be granted on the basis of NEET score.
