Rohingya In National Register of Citizens (NRC), Now Cooling Heels In Jail

SILCHAR: How fair will the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be? This question has been impinging the minds of individuals and organizations concerned with the preparation of a fault-free and foreigner-free NRC. A person declared foreigner by Foreigners’ Tribunal could get his name enlisted in NRC and when detected dared to challenge it in the Gauhati High Court. Certain instances of aliens getting their names enlisted in the draft NRC have strengthened the apprehension about the monumental exercise being above board. The Centre and the Public Works Committee have moved the Supreme Court for reverification.

In the latest instance, a Rohingiya identified as Alam Hussain Mazunder (45) from Myanmar strayed into Bangladesh, then entered India 12 years ago through the Karimganj border to find safe shelter in the house of Ajijur Rahman Laskar of Bhagadar Betukandi village under Berenga gaon panchayat near this town. He was, however, arrested in a joint raid by Assam Rifles and police, and on Saturday produced before the CJM Court, which sent him to jail. Not only did he get shelter but also got married to Ajijur’s daughter Resna Begum. How many Rohingiyas have got such hospitality in Cachar is not known.

Alam Hussain originally hails from Euqub Bumidang village of Rakhain province of Myanmar.  Hussain is not just an ordinary infiltrator, but a high profile camouflage person. After infiltrating into Bangladesh, he stayed for some time in Bangladesh and from there he went to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He again came back to Bangladesh and before coming to Bhagadar, he had gone to Haflong where he worked for some time as an employee in a shop. With what mission did he go to those countries? Cross-examination by Assam Rifles and police of the Sadar police station has revealed many an intriguing thing. He is suspected to have links with the Rohingiya Salvation Army and ISI of Pakistan. But, Alam Hussain denied such allegations against him.

While staying in his in-law’s (Ajijur Rahman) house, Alam concealed his real identity and took to the role of a ‘healer of all ailments’ and became an acceptable figure in and around the village of Bhagadar Betukandi. In the meantime, taking advantage of a section of the corrupt officials, he could obtain necessary documents like Pan Card, Aadhaar, Bank Saving Account Book, Voter ID Card and finally get access to the NRC. Investigation is now on to have further information about Alam and how he could get all the documents.

Acting on secret information, a joint raid was conducted in the house of Ajijur Rahman by Assam Rifles and Sadar Police in the evening of last Friday from where Alam Hussain was arrested. Ajijur Rahman is absconding.
