Six new judges for Madras HC

CHENNAI: Six more new judges have been appointed for Madras high court, where the sitting strength will go up to 54, as against the sanctioned strength of 75. On Tuesday, the six selected candidates wrote their names in Devanagari script, as per custom.
The hand-written names will now be cut out and pasted on the Presidential Warrant of Appointment, as and when it is released. Their names are expected to be notified in double quick time, as the presidential elections are set to be notified in a couple of days.
In the newest addition to the chartered high court’s bench Abdul Qudhoose wil bes a second generation judge, whereas M Dhandapani is a veteran Enforcement Directorate (ED) senior special prosecutor who has been handling several sensitive cases involving top leaders of the ruling AIADMK.
Audhikesavalu is junior of advocate-general of Tamil Nadu R Muthukumaraswamy, whereas Jagadish Chandra was former additional public prosecutor of Madras high court. G R Swaminathan is at present assistant solicitor-general of India at Madurai bench of Madras high court, while Bhavani Subbarayan is the lone woman member in the list.
This batch of six names had been pending before the Supreme Court and the Centre for nearly a year and half, and at least 20 more names in two separate lists are pending before the Supreme Court for appointment as judges. All the lists were forwarded during the chief justiceship of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, who has since been elevated to the Supreme Court.
