GUWAHATI: Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Arup Kumar Goswami has appealed to the 200 newly appointed foreigners tribunal (FT) members (judges) to be very punctual and thorough, besides being devoted and dedicated, while giving their opinions on the nationalities of NRC dropouts.
Justice Arup Kumar Goswami has spelt out at length as to what the newly appointed judges need to do to ensure justice to those declared ineligible for inclusion into the NRC. He was speaking at the commencement of the two-day orientation programme organized for briefing the newly appointed FT judges on their duties and responsibilities at the Assam Administrative Staff College here on Saturday.
Justice Goswami said, “Each and every document needs keen examination and through verification with a cool and clear mind. You have been entrusted with an important task. Delve deep into the depths of claims and objections with utmost care and execute your duties with full devotion and dedication.”
Addressing the new FT members, Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Political Department Kumar Sanjay Krishna dwelt on the importance of the duty which the new FT members have been entrusted to in the context of NRC and its subsequent phases. He also briefed the FT members on the procedure they need to follow right from the issuance of notices to NRC dropouts to giving opinions on them – appreciation of evidences in the references of proceedings, relevant Acts and Rules, duties and responsibilities, etc. He added that any problem of claimants of far-flung areas have to be taken into consideration while establishing the new electronic FTs. He also spelt out the importance of the newly set up electronic FTs in maintaining a digital database meant to benefit all stakeholders concerned.
People who have failed to make it to the final NRC can appeal to any of the designated FTs within 120 days after receiving the rejection orders from the NRC authority.
Earlier, while Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the Gauhati High Court briefed the new FT members on ‘Foreigners in Assam: Legislative and Perspective’, Special DGP (Border) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta explained the objectives and benefits of electronic FTs.
Justice Manas Ranjan Pathak, Justice Manojit Bhuyan, Justice Achinta Mallah Bujarbaruah, Justice Prashanta Kumar Deka, Justice Ajit Barthakur and Justice Manish Choudhury were also present at the orientation programme.
