Yet Another Attempt to Rid Patna from Traffic Nightmare

Development Commissioner Anand Kishore and Patna District Magistrate (DM) Kumar Ravi personally supervised the latest anti-encroachment drive on Hartali Mor and Bailey Road to widen the roads along with making some major change in the flow of traffic that is, like in the past, expected to ease the burden on Patna streets while at the same time providing some much-needed relief to the commuters.

Kishore said that this ‘mega’ anti-encroachment drive will be carried out in the coming days on Bailey Road, Frazer Road, Exhibition Road, Boring Road, Boring Canal Road, and the old by-pass in Kankarbagh.

“We have identified many areas on these roads that are burgeoning with illegal construction taking up a large portion of the roads. These will be removed in the coming days that would make the flow of the traffic much smoother,” the Development Commissioner said.

It may be noted that such drives have been taken up many times in the past with little to no result.

To further ease up traffic in the city, the administration disabled the traffic signal on Hartali Mor. Those going towards Patna Secretariat from Boring Canal Road will have to take the U-turn on the west side of the Bihar Museum. Same will apply to those going to Boring Canal Road from Daroga Rai Path.

Once the section of the Bailey Road near Patna Women’s College and High Court is widened following the removal of all illegal encroachments, the traffic light at the High Court intersection will also be removed, Kishore said.

Saturday also saw the change in traffic flow on the busy Jamal Road that has been made one-way moving only in the south direction. In other words, one won’t be able to get into it from the Patna Junction side, the Development Commissioner said.

On the southern side of the city, people on the Mithapur side moving eastward will now have to take the flyover near the Patna GPO via Hanuman Temple eventually connecting with the Chiraiyantand Pul.

Some critic of the plan say the situation has already worsened due to new traffic movement decisions and will only get worse in the coming days as the local administration makes more roads one-way and remove existing traffic lights.
